Pequod's (Morton Grove)

Super GemMorton Grove (suburb) · Pizza Community-sourced, unverified
📍 8520 Fernald Ave, Chicago, IL 60053

This Morton Grove address is where it all started — Burt Katz, the self-described "father of the caramelized pan pizza crust," opened the original Pequod's here in 1971 after an earlier run at Gullivers Pizza & Pub in Rogers Park.

The caramelized crust is the detail that separates this from every other deep dish in the city — order it once and you'll understand why people specifically drive to Morton Grove for it.

Katz sold the business in 1986 (the new owners opened the now-better-known Lincoln Park location in 1992) and later ran Burt's Place a block away from 1989 until 2015.

This is still the address pizza pilgrims mean when they talk about where the caramelized crust actually began.
