He opened a stand on the idea, lost the whole thing in a card game three years later, scraped together enough money to start over, and moved to the current River Grove spot in 1950 with his friend Jude DeSantis. For years the building didn't even have a sign — it just said "Vienna Red Hots," and regulars called it River Road Hot Dogs. What Gene actually invented was the Depression Dog: mustard, onions, relish, sport peppers, and fresh-cut fries piled right on top of the dog, no tomato, no pickle spear, no ketchup anywhere on the premises.

It's been in the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame since 2006, and in 2011 both Rachael Ray's magazine and Serious Eats independently named it the best hot dog in the entire country out of 64 stands tested. Still family-run by Gene's son, still cash only, still no seats — just counters along the wall to eat standing up the way people have here since 1950.
