Super GemChicago Exclusive GemDish Gem$$Jim and Meg Capannari, along with Meg's sister Katie and her husband Ken Dix, opened the ice cream shop inside it in June 2001, and Chicago Magazine named it the city's best ice cream just one year later. One thing worth knowing before you visit: after 25 years, the next generation has taken over the retail shop and rebranded it Cap's Ice Cream, while the Capannari name continues on the catering and wholesale side — same recipes, same family, same building, just a new sign for a new chapter.
Every batch is still small-batch, four gallons at a time, made by hand rather than mass-produced. Beyond the classics, look for genuinely distinctive flavors like Irish Coffee, ginger, chocolate hazelnut ganache, and lavender alongside the seasonal rotation.
