📍 3655 E 106th St, Chicago, IL 60617

El Charro de San Francisco sits on East 106th Street a few blocks from the Indiana line, and it has exactly the kind of backstory a far Southeast Side restaurant should have.

$
Tacos al pastor, suadero and arrachera, the three the family says they're known for, with a café de olla on the side.

It opened in 1982 as a taquería called San Francisco, the Vázquez and Guzman families took it over in 1998 and renamed it, and the recipes trace back to Jesús María in Los Altos de Jalisco by way of a father who worked taco stands in Mexico City, Guadalajara and then Chicago. The house calling cards are tacos al pastor, arrachera and suadero, and the menu runs wide from there: tortas, gorditas, burritos, tostadas, shrimp a la diabla or al mojo de ajo, caldo de res, chilaquiles, and a café de olla worth ordering even in July. Doors open at 9 a.m. every day and stay open until 10:30 p.m., so it works as a breakfast stop as easily as a dinner spot.

The deals rotate through the week: a $9.99 grilled chicken plate with rice and beans on Tuesdays, $7.99 mimosas daily from noon to 3, and a weekend cocktail of the day (piña coladas Friday, Moscow mules Saturday, cantaritos Sunday) at one for $7.99 or two for $10.99. Practical notes from the house menu: paying cash gets you menu price while cards carry a 4% fee, parties of four or more get an 18% gratuity, and ordering through the restaurant's own SkyTab page is cheaper than the delivery apps. Southside Weekly named it one of the best Mexican spots on the Indiana border.
